NIC stands for Nordfriesisches Innovations-Center in Niebüll. But how exactly does the NIC actually support start-ups and young entrepreneurs?
“We offer the all-round carefree package for founders,” says Birte Volquardsen, Center Manager of the NIC in Niebüll. “Start-ups are confronted with many new questions and infrastructural challenges. We not only offer an office for rent here, but also provide an entire support service that makes it easier for founders to concentrate fully on their young project. We are like the good spirits who remove the obstacles for our tenants and ensure smooth workflows and contacts with other founders.”
So an office in the NIC is not just a nice place to work. The service includes a whole bundle of special services that make work easier. This begins with the state-of-the-art reception area in the Innovation Center, which welcomes every customer professionally and individually. Office services include printers and photocopiers, a dedicated mailbox, coffee and refreshments for tenants, a fully equipped kitchen, company representation on the NIC website, full meeting equipment and much more.

The very first step for founders is to decide whether to rent an office or start with a virtual office. With a Virtual Office in the NIC, you have a business address with a P.O. Box and, as an additional service on request, a forwarding and letter opening service. Such virtual offices often lead to regular tenancies later on.
Anyone wishing to rent in the NIC must already have registered a business or be self-employed. However, requests for rooms are often made in advance. Birte Volquardsen and NIC Managing Director Tilmann Meyer offer people with start-up ideas a comprehensive advisory service. This ranges from providing relevant contacts, for example on topics such as brand protection, microcredits or tax, to providing guidance on drawing up a business plan. “People who want to set up a business can always come to us for advice, even if they don’t intend to rent an office at the NIC,” says Birte Volquardsen.
The price and the term of the lease depend on how long the company has been on the market. The younger, the more favorable the conditions. It is possible to choose between different office sizes. A comprehensive range of services is always included and special services can also be booked, such as office cleaning or catering for appointments and events.
“The portfolio of tenants is very diverse,” says Tilmann Meyer, “it ranges from coaching, services, trade, sales and crafts to manufacturing and online-savvy companies. Everything from daycare, online stores and software development to schnapps production has already been included and we welcome every good idea!”
The good service is greatly appreciated by the tenants, as Birte Volquardsen and her assistant Britta Dau remove every obstacle out of the way, be it a forgotten office key, the care of plants on vacation, the reception of guests or the acceptance of large deliveries of goods. “We always feel the gratitude of our colleagues and we really appreciate it,” says a delighted Britta Dau.
Incidentally, you don’t have to be an office tenant to take advantage of the NICs. It is also possible to rent a fully equipped guest office on a daily or hourly basis, or to work in the modern co-working space. Here you can meet like-minded people who enjoy working remotely and are inspired by new places and other co-workers. The permanent tenants also benefit from this pool of ideas and Birte Volquardsen regularly invites them to an inspiring exchange of ideas in the NIC rooms.
And good to know: The event rooms, event spaces and conference rooms of the North Frisian Innovation Center are not only available to start-ups, but to all companies in the region.
