MOINBoard 2.0: Working Together to Recruit Workers on the Islands

Recruiting workers on the North Frisian Islands and Halligen requires digital solutions and reliable local contacts. MOINBoard brings these approaches together. Starting in January 2027, the North Frisian Economic Development Agency will take over cross-island coordination and support the project’s further development over the next three years.

Making it easier to get to the island

Whether in healthcare, the restaurant industry, skilled trades, or administration: skilled workers and service staff are urgently needed on the islands. However, for people who want to make Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, Helgoland, Pellworm, or the Halligen their new home, finding the right job is often not enough. Finding housing, dealing with government agencies, and a lack of local contacts can make getting started difficult.

This is exactly where MOINBoard comes in: The digital platform, available since April 2026, helps interested individuals find jobs, prepare for their move, and settle in on the island. The AI-powered Job Finder helps users find suitable positions, while the Move Planner assists with organizational steps and dealing with government agencies. The Island Type Checker and the Island Guides provide guidance on life on the island.

The first six months show a positive trend: MOINBoard is being used throughout Germany. The Job Finder has been particularly popular so far.

Digital Support Meets Personal Guidance

MOINBoard is based on scientific findings and discussions with regional businesses. A WorkforceMobility study involving 2,000 working-age individuals shows that the willingness to change jobs decreases as soon as it involves moving to an island or a Hallig. In interviews with 120 businesses, recruitment and employee retention were identified as key challenges.

The results make it clear: In addition to attractive jobs, people need assistance with housing issues, clear information, and accessible points of contact.

Starting in 2027, therefore, each island will have a “Guide for New Islanders” serving as a dedicated point of contact. This person will assist new residents as they settle in, facilitate interaction with employers, and organize events such as regular get-togethers. This will provide a personal, on-site complement to the digital platform.

The North Frisia Economic Development Agency is handling the coordination

As the North Frisia Economic Development Agency, we will take over the cross-island coordination of MOINBoard starting in January 2027. Together with our participating partners, we aim to connect existing programs, consolidate overlapping structures, and strengthen cooperation among the islands.

“Anyone who wants to work on an island needs more than just the right job offer. With MOINBoard, we combine digital support with local, in-person contacts. This makes it easier for people to settle in while also helping businesses attract and retain workers,” explains Dr. Matthias Hüppauff, managing director of the North Frisia Economic Development Agency.
